About Abul Rizvi

Dr Abul Rizvi is a former Deputy Secretary of the Department of Immigration. From 1995 to 2007, he managed Australia’s migration program, commissioning research on the demographic, economic and budgetary impact of immigration that was critical to policy development, including Australia’s first Intergenerational Report.

Abul was awarded the Public Service Medal and the Centenary Medal for services to the development and implementation of immigration policy, including the reshaping of Australia's intake to focus on skilled migration, slow the rate of population ageing and boost international education and tourism.

An economics and public policy graduate from the Australian National University, Abul earned his PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2020. He is the author of Population Shock (2021, Monash University Press) and a regular media commentator on Australian population and immigration matters.
